As leaders we know very little change occurs until we make a significant change in the way we see the world and those who live in it. If you are striving to become a better leader, there are a few challenges you must endure.
- Challenge how you think about growth. Growth is not a solo endeavor. Leaders need other leaders. Peers need other peers. You need people in your corner who have experienced the same challenges, the same threats, and the same types of successes. You need others to fuel your endeavors.
- Challenge your mindset. Replace a scarcity mindset with one of abundance. When we believe there's only so much to go around, we're not willing to show everyone our whole hand. If you're in a position of leadership, you begin to be overly careful with how you invest in your team, you will—consciously or unconsciously—avoid the kinds of behaviors which tend toward equipping and empowering others for success. Leaders who recognize the universe reveals to us an abundance—there is plenty for everyone—are not afraid to empower others and to equip those they serve.
- Don’t be afraid to challenge others. Invest deeply in a vulnerable, trusting relationship, to challenge others to bring their best to the table and to coach them through the effort. Don’t be afraid to encourage, to affirm, and to appreciate. Individuals have basic needs such as safety and survival. Once these needs are met the desire shifts from safety and survival to appreciation, affirmation, and validation. Leaders who are free in themselves will encourage freedom in those they're given to serve.
